Visualizing pair formation on the atomic scale in the high-[T.sub.c] superconductor [Bi.sub.2][Sr.sub.2]Ca[Cu.sub.2][O.sub.8{delta]]
Article Abstract:
Scanning tunneling microscopy is used for spatially resolved measurements of gap formation in a high transition temperature [T.sub.c] superconductor [Bi.sub.2][Sr.sub.2]Ca[Cu.sub.2][O.sub.8{delta]]. The nanometre-sized pairing regions have provided the missing microscopic basis for understanding the fluctuating superconducting response above [T.sub.c] in hole-doped high-[T.sub.c] copper oxide superconductors.

Quantum critical behaviour in a high-T(sub)c superconductor
Article Abstract:
Results show that a quantum phase transition at zero temperature can occur in materials such as heavy-fermion systems and high-transition temperature (high-T(sub)c) copper oxide superconductors. Data indicate that a quantum phase transition in the high-T(sub)c superconductor is suggested by the identical phase angle and optical conductivity.

Signature of optimal doping in Hall-effect measurements on a high-temperature superconductor
Article Abstract:
Research reveals that the Hall effect does not exhibit monotonic variation with doping but shows a sharp change at the optimum doping for superconductivity. Data indicate that two competing ground states form the basis of the high-temperature superconducting phase.
